Professional Attorneys in Meridian, Idaho
Protecting Your Interests. Quality. Integrity. Dedication.
You didn't wake up today planning to require an attorney. Maybe a parent is becoming older, and you’re not sure who will make choices if they can’t. Maybe you are closing on a piece of property and the title firm has noticed something. Maybe you established your firm two years ago on a handshake and now you need it in writing. Whatever brought you here, our Meridian lawyers have undoubtedly managed similar situations, right here in the Treasure Valley.
Serving the Treasure Valley from Fairview Avenue for 25+ Years
Murphy Law Office has been in practice since September 2000 in Meridian, Idaho. We’re located in the Initial Point Business Park on E. Fairview Avenue, near Maddie’s Wine and Whiskey, which is generally the simplest landmark to give someone directions. We've watched this valley grow from a little village outside of Boise to one of the fastest growing towns in the state and we have expanded our practice right along with it.
We're a Meridian law practice, operated by attorneys who live here, and always has been.
Why Local Families and Business Owners Trust Our Meridian Attorneys
A few things we hear a lot from clients, so we figured we'd just say them up front:
- Our attorneys have decades of combined experience, not just years
- We use paralegals efficiently so you're not paying attorney rates for work that doesn't require an attorney
- We work with a purpose toward resolution, not toward running up billable hours
- Our hourly rates are competitive for the Treasure Valley
- We offer flat rate fees for estate planning and business formation, so you know the cost before we start
- We're centrally located, easy to get to from Eagle, Boise, Nampa or anywhere else in the valley
We built this firm around the idea that clients should stay in control of their situation, not the other way around. That means we explain things in plain language, we give you real options, and we don't drag matters out longer than they need to be.
Estate Planning Attorneys in Meridian: Protecting What You've Built
Estate planning isn’t only for the wealthy. People from all walks of life benefit from having a plan in place to see to it that their wishes are truly carried out, that their minor children or heirs with special needs are cared for, and that their assets are protected rather than having a probate judge who has never met them, or a family member who has to guess about your wishes decide. As estate planning attorneys in Meridian and the surrounding area, we help families create personalized documents including wills, revocable living trusts, powers of attorney, living wills and health care directives that comply with Idaho law, not a form you downloaded off the internet that doesn't take into account Idaho's community property rules or how our probate court actually handles these matters.
We also assist with the often overlooked area of beneficiary designations on retirement funds and life insurance policies. We have seen more than one example where the will said one thing and an old beneficiary form indicated something else totally, and that discrepancy caused severe complications for the family left behind. We can guide you through that process, working with your financial planner if needed, before it becomes an issue.
Elder Law Attorneys Guiding Families Through Guardianship, Probate, and Long-Term Care
Many of our clients who need help with elder law initially come to us through elder law, frequently when a parent’s health has taken a turn and the family is trying to figure out what to do. We assist with guardianships and conservatorships when someone is unable to handle their own affairs, help with the Medicaid planning talk no one likes to have, and take families through the probate process when a loved one dies. We handle the probate process in Ada County, Canyon County, Gem County, Owhyee County, and many other Idaho counties.
This element of our work is based on trust. We’ve sat with families through some of the most difficult weeks of their lives and we know the difference between just shoving the papers through and truly assisting someone to make a decision they can live with.
Business Law Built for Treasure Valley Entrepreneurs
Meridian has a lot of small businesses getting off the ground right now and most of the owners we meet aren’t legal professionals, they’re contractors, restaurant owners, consultants, individuals who are strong at their craft and need someone to do the legal part of it so they can focus on running their business. We assist you in choosing the most appropriate entity,; LLC, corporation, partnership, whatever matches your situation and your tax picture, and we craft the documents that truly protect you, not just appear official.
We have extensive and varied experience with business dissolutions and partnership disagreements, so we know what it looks like when things go wrong. Preparing and filing the formation papers correctly from the beginning means you avoid most of those difficulties down the road.
Real Estate Law: Know Your Rights Before You Buy, Sell, or Build
The Meridian real estate market moves fast and that’s when individuals miss details they shouldn’t. We analyze purchase and sale agreements, resolve title issues before they blow up a closing, and help landlords and renters resolve lease disputes before they end up in court. If you’re dealing with an easement issue with a neighbor or trying to make sense of a Homeowner’s Association’s CC&Rs, we can help with that.
Idaho has its own idiosyncrasies around real property, for instance non-judicial foreclosures operate differently here than in a lot of places, and it’s the type of thing that trips up out of state as well as local purchasers.
Idaho Law Isn't Generic. Neither Is Our Approach to It.
A lot of legal problems look the same on paper no matter what state you're in but the rules for solving them aren't the same at all. Idaho’s probate statutes have their own time frames. Idaho LLC’s and Corporations involve separate filing requirements with the Secretary of State. In Idaho, the homestead exemption is different from what you would see in most states. We practice in Idaho, Arizona, Utah and Washington and we keep current on the way the law in these jurisdictions is really implemented.
That's the difference between an attorney who knows the law and an attorney who knows how the law plays out in an Ada County courtroom or at the Canyon County recorder's office. We've spent our careers working here. We know both.
Meet the Attorneys Behind Murphy Law Office
Mia Murphy started the company in Meridian in 2000 and has practiced in Idaho since 1994. Jake Bateman grew up in the Boise area, served in the Marine Corps and returned to practice law. Chuck Murphy is a double U of I graduate and has practiced in Idaho since 1994. This is not a passing-through group of lawyers on the way somewhere else. We made our careers in this valley, and most of us are planning to retire here, too.
Common Questions About Hiring an Attorney in Meridian, Idaho
Do I actually need a living trust, or is a will enough?
It depends on what you own and how you want things handled. We'll walk through your situation and tell you honestly which one fits, sometimes it's both.
How long does probate take in Idaho?
It varies quite a bit depending on the size of the estate the estate plan that was in place, and whether anyone contests it, but a straightforward Idaho probate case often takes a lot less time and is much less complicated than people assume. We can give you a more specific timeline once we know the details of the estate.
What's the difference between a guardianship and a conservatorship in Idaho?
A guardian makes personal and health related decisions for someone who can't make them anymore and assists with the activities of daily living. A conservator manages that person's finances and property. Sometimes one person handles both roles, sometimes the court appoints two different people. Sometimes professionals to act as a guardian or a conservator are a more appropriate choice. We help families figure out which arrangement actually fits their situation.
Do I need an attorney to form an LLC in Idaho?
Legally, no. Practically, it depends on your business. You may not need much help with a simple filing, but if you have partners, outside investors, or specific liability concerns, getting the operating agreement, bylaws, and other documentation right at the start saves a lot of trouble down the road.
What should I bring to a first meeting with an attorney?
Whatever documents you already have related to the issue, prior wills, deeds, contracts, correspondence, and a general timeline of what's happened so far. Even if it's incomplete, it helps us get oriented faster.
